Mid Summer at the Flower Farm
We had a few “firsts” this week at Beck Farms.
The first summer bouquet subscriptions went out — the ones we’ve been growing since they were seeds.
The farmstand quietly opened its doors, built from hundred-year-old fence boards from this very property.
And U-pick season? Just around the corner — once the dahlias say they’re ready.
It’s all beautiful, and yet... I still found myself lying in the field, staring at the sky, thinking:
Am I doing enough? Am I handling this well enough? Is this good enough?
There’s a pressure I carry sometimes that whispers:
You should have it figured out by now.
You should be blooming.
Before that moment in the field, I’d been walking past rows where the sweet peas, foxgloves, and other spring blooms have already fizzled out — their moment passed for the year. And it always catches me a little off guard… how quickly their beauty came and went.
But maybe that’s the point.
Some things bloom early and fade fast. Others wait, slow and steady.
And both are right. Both are beautiful.
But then I notice the lisianthus — known for their extraordinarily long growing period.
Still tucked inside their stems, not rushing, not pushing.
They’ve been growing underground for weeks (started indoors in January) and only now are beginning to bloom.
Not late. Not behind. Just… in their own time.

I came across a quote that felt like it was written just for me:
"Sometimes I get so caught up in motherhood, I forget I’m also a girl in her 30s living for the first time."
Yes, I’m a mother. A grower. A business owner. A wife. A church leader.
But I’m also still becoming. Still figuring it out.
Maybe you are too.
So let this be your permission slip:
You don’t have to have it all together.
You don’t have to bloom yet.
You’re not behind. You’re just still growing. And that is holy work.
We don’t rush the flowers.
We don’t actually have to rush ourselves either.
